IV.  INFLAMMATION/INFECTION PHASE (7 days to Wound Closure)

Pulmonary problems remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality during this very complex phase. The smoke inhalation injury will persist during this period but is often complicated by pulmonaryinfection most evident after the first week. Pulmonary failure and pulmonary sepsis exceed burn wound sepsis as a cause of mortality, especially in the later post-burn period.  There are three major pulmonary processes occurring during this period that will be discussed.
