IV. INFLAMMATION/INFECTION PHASE (7 days to Wound
Closure)
Pulmonary problems remain a major cause of
morbidity and mortality during this very
complex phase. The smoke inhalation injury
will persist during this period but is often
complicated by pulmonaryinfection most evident
after the first week. Pulmonary failure and
pulmonary sepsis exceed burn wound sepsis as a
cause of mortality, especially in the later
post-burn period. There are three major
pulmonary processes occurring during this
period that will be discussed.
